Kampala: Co-creating water resilience through circular water management and stakeholder participation

HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS CASE STUDY: First, please refer to the Teacher's Guide using the yellow "View Materials" button on the left pane. The teacher's guide outlines the purpose, contents, approach, case structure, and technical information of this case study. This case study was curated from other independently published open educational resources and from existing materials on this platform. These resources are also organized by domain. At the bottom of each resource's page, you can see both the city case study and SURF Resilience domain to which it belongs. Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This case study contains a teaching guide, one theme titled 'Co-creation of Sustainable Cities,' seven short videos, and a gaming simulation. To get a better understanding of the co-creation structure in Kampala within the first theme, you can follow a number of lectures on stakeholder dynamics and how to analyze them, and what entails an effective stakeholder participation. Then, you will also see how sustainable cooking practices are helping to reduce air pollution in informal settlements. Finish the case study by playing the Invest in the Future game to experiment with designing urban areas for better climate change resilience.

The Socio-Technical Context of Kampala's Water Chain

Dr. Bas van Vliet introduces the water chain in Kampala, which is exemplary of other cities in the Global South. He will show you the drinking water system and the diversity of sanitation systems in the serviced and unserviced parts of the city. Being one of the fastest growing cities in the Global South, Kampala’s water chain is a co-production of various users and providers, and it is radically different from water chains in the Global North.

Faecal Sludge Management

Human waste has value in faecal sludge management. Dr. Katarzyna Kujawa-Roeleveld introduces the concept and shares why it is critical to consider the whole sanitation chain, from excreta collection to safe disposal and or reuse of faecal sludge, to achieve true access to safe sanitation.

Air Quality in Kampala

First, we will look at Kampala’s air quality from a general and natural science perspective. Dr. Folkert Boersma will give an introduction to Kampala´s air quality, explain which factors play a role in the city’s air quality, and how it compares to other cities around the world. Learning Objectives: Understand the state of Kampala’s air quality Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events.

Co-creation on Kampala's Air Quality

Dr. Patience Mguni and Dr. Bas van Vliet reflect on the forms of co-creation for more sustainable cooking practices in the slums of Kampala. They highlight this section’s most important lessons and give an outlook on the future. What do you think is needed for a transition towards clean cooking practices? Learning Objectives: Understand ways citizens of Kampala are co-creating sustainable solutions to air quality issues Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events.

Coupling Sanitation Systems with Agricultural Production

Now you know why it is important to include faecal sludge management as part of each sanitation solution. You have also heard about the potential benefits for a community when recourses are recovered from faecal sludge. But how does this work? How can we make valuable products from human waste? Let’s find out in the next video with PhD researcher Rosanne Wielemaker. She will explain how the nutrients in human waste can become a valuable resource by using them as fertilizers in agricultural production. Learning Objectives: Understand the value human waste in making valuable products like fertilizers in agricultural production. Describe adaptation; robustness and/or intervention strategies for STE systems.
