Open Education menu

We created a ready-to-use menu with 17 different Open Education practices to be implemented in your education. With each practice turned into its own dish and recipe, you can easily see how the practice can be implemented, with its difficulty level and examples. The goal is to provide you with ideas and examples on how to implement Open Science practices into your education. Or use the menu as a starting point for conversations about open educational practices with colleagues! Already an expert? The menu can also be used for a 1-hour workshop on Open Educational practices for others interested in Open Science. Let the participants select a dish from the menu they are interested in, and help them to adapt the dish so they can turn their own ideas into real practices.

Systems Thinking Pressure Cooker

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to systems thinking. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a system are and have them experience various examples of using systems thinking to explore a topic or question. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with systems thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of systems thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and a 10 minutes pre-class video.

Faces of Open Science workshop

Drawing on Utrecht University's Faces of Open Science project, we’ve developed a set of ready-to-use educational activities that invite participants to explore the rich diversity of perspectives within the open science movement. These engaging, interactive materials help learners reflect on their own views, values, and roles in shaping open science—making abstract principles tangible, personal, and actionable. The materials can be used in full as a 4-hour workshop or can be split up in separate activities that take between 30 and 60 minutes. Activities are all developed to promote interaction between participants, for example by storytelling, crafting, or debating.

Book – Key Texts on Interdisciplinary Higher Education

Edited by Iris van der Tuin, Dean for Interdisciplinary Education at Utrecht University. In addition to being an important resource for those who teach or design interdisciplinary courses and curricula, the book also serves as a baseline measurement of educational research into interdisciplinarity. Where do we stand in that research? Topics in practice-driven educational research on interdisciplinarity include: student learning, teacher learning, collaboration and communication, the role of disciplinary and personal diversity, and support for learning through analog and digital tools. The book contains an introduction that focuses on the UU definition of interdisciplinarity: disciplined interdisciplinarity, with attention to disciplines and specializations, careful design of the integration process, and reflection on knowledge, science, and the university.

Pressure Cooker Design Thinking

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to design and design thinking. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a design process are and have them experience one iteration of a design process. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with design thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of design thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and two 15 minutes pre- and post-class assignments Made by Nina Bohm On behalf of IDO

Object Orientation Pressure Cooker

What — This methodology fits research projects that use a concrete “surprising” object as the starting point of “more complex” inquiry. The methodology invites students: to make an inventory of different perspectives to study a central object, and understand what knowledge these perspectives will yield about particular elements of their research project topic; to understand the relations/connections between these various disciplinary perspectives and elements, and; to make an informed decision about which perspectives and elements to pursue and which ones to leave out For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a seminar/working group of students (bachelor 3, honours and ma/rma students) as well as educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in object orientation supports the appreciation of multi-perspectivity (identity dimension and/or social-interactive dimension of interdisciplinary learning) which aids in grasping defining elements of various disciplines (cognitive dimension). How long—Depending on the context, it can be done as a quick starter or as a class-filling activity. In-class activities take up to two and a half hours. Preparation at home takes around two hours. Didactical Design Tool Interdisciplinary Education

As a teacher, you face some major challenges in designing, teaching and evaluating interdisciplinary education. So we have developed a design instrument to support you in your role as a teacher in choosing specific learning objectives, activities and assessment formats, which together design the students’ interdisciplinary learning process. This instrument utilises the constructive alignment design concept for interdisciplinary education.

Organisational Guide Interdisciplinary Education

This guide is aimed at teachers that are looking to (re-)develop interdisciplinary or interdepartmental/interfaculty education. In addition it is useful for those teachers that intend to develop multi- or transdisciplinary educational initiatives that will have to work across departmental or faculty boundaries. This guide comprises the entire organizational design-, execution-, and evaluation process for educational endeavours. In addition, significant attention is given to the development of the content of the education, which is a process that may take place simultaneously with the organizational development, or take place separately. Content matters can be found in step 4. We recommend reading this guide in its entirety before starting with step 1. Although the steps are placed in a recommended order, in practice steps might overlap (in time) with others. Also, it will be beneficial per se to have an overview of ‘what’s to come’ before embarking on an educational (re-)development journey. The process of creating this guide is ongoing. We cannot anticipate every scenario, nor can overlook specific details. Therefore, if you run into any questions, or discover omissions that need to be remedied or added, discuss it with your colleagues and please be so kind as to alert the developers of this guide Caspar Schoevaars (c.m.schoevaars@uu.nl) or Margreet van der Ham (m.h.vanderham@uu.nl). Corrections, suggestions, gratitude and additional best practices are always welcomed!

We raden je aan om dit stappenplan in zijn geheel door te lezen, alvorens de eerste stap te zetten. Mogelijk lopen stappen die hieronder in volgordelijkheid worden gepresenteerd, meer door elkaar.
