Integrated Infrastructure Design Guide

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty? It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. The book demonstrates how infrastructure can be more than merely a functional system. It becomes a driver of societal value and prosperity, and a strategic instrument that connects quality of life, sustainability and economic development. This Design Guide offers a clear conceptual framework to understand and design infrastructure that is not only more efficient, but also more sustainable, inclusive and meaningful. Drawn from thematical insights and lessons, and applicable methods, techniques and strategies by a broad range of scientists and professionals of practice with a background architecture, urban development and design, landscape architecture, civil engineering, economics, governance or policy. A substantial and indispensable guide for designers, engineers and policymakers committed to shaping the infrastructure and the society of tomorrow.

Circulair Economy #5 - Shifting Mindsets for a Circular Future: Systems Thinking, Leadership & Circular Innovation

In this episode, Ilse van den Berckt (UCLL/CIMIO) and Mariam Ioseliani (International Business exchange student) join host Maerhaba Yishake to explore why shifting mindsets, from linear to circular thinking, is a crucial but often overlooked driver in sustainability transitions. Together, they discuss how systems thinking, leadership, and collaboration can help unlock real change in the circular economy.

The Evolution of Structural Glass Design

In this video, James O'Callaghan traces structural glass from its emergence in the mid‑1990s as a substitute for wood and steel through to its use in the present day. Glass offers unique transparency, strength, and stiffness, making it suitable for beams, floors, and columns. However, its purely elastic behavior provides no warning before failure. Key challenges center mainly on connections, where failure can occur without visible signs of overstress. Because bolted connections create such problematic local stresses, novel inserted connections were developed to preserve transparency and improve structural efficiency . Realised projects include Apple's Fifth Avenue cube (2006 and 2011), Zorlu in Istanbul, and the Steve Jobs Theater. Lastly, James O'Callaghan advises future engineers to approach glass with curiosity, not limiting it to windows or structural roles, but exploring its full potential. Despite its embodied carbon, glass remains vital for connecting people to light and the outdoors. Its future depends on fresh, naive eyes that ask what glass can do, not what it has done. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to James O'Callaghan for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Teaching & learning for a better future: Education for sustainable development (ESD)

This is a brief introduction to the topic of Sustainable Development in higher education teaching create for teachers. It touches on three areas: 1) Why all higher education teachers should know about sustainable development & should implement ESD into their own teaching. 2) How you, irrespective of your discipline, can address the topic sustainable development in your own teaching. 3) Places where you can find more information & teaching resources.

De Reflector – Beyond Elemental Loss | Radboud Reflects Lecture by philosopher Marjolein Oele

How can the classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth—help us grapple with loss in an era of climate change? In her latest book Beyond Elemental Loss, philosopher Marjolein Oele observes how shifting elements, such as unusual weather, polluted air and sudden wildfires, can leave us feeling disoriented. Drawing on indigenous knowledge, as well as great thinkers such as Elinor Ostrom and Michael Serres, she makes a case for trust-building as a path forward. Yet, in an age of historically low trust in politics, how can trust offer a solution? Listen to this conversation between philosopher Cees Leijenhorst and environmental philosopher Marjolein Oele about her latest book, covering how we can view loss during a climate crisis through the elements, the importance of communities, and whether she is optimistic about the future. About the speaker Marjolein Oele is professor of Philosophy of the Humanities at Radboud University. She is the author of Beyond Elemental Loss: Shifting Constellations of Water, Fire, Air and Earth and E-Co-Affectivity: Exploring Pathos at Life's Material Interfaces. Her most recent research project focuses on ‘affects’ in the Anthropocene. Did you find this interesting? Subscribe to the channel on which you listened to De Reflector. For example, you will not miss any audio recording of the in-depth lectures of Radboud Reflects. The Reflector This is The Reflector. The podcast of Radboud Reflects with an in-depth interview about the latest book by a scientist. What are the big questions this book answers? What is its value to society? The History of the Future with Adriaan Duiveman | In a Nutshell

Can we predict the future? How is identity shaped by the past? And how can history help with making sense of our present? In today’s episode, Antonia and guest Adriaan Duiveman go – quite literally – back to the future and talk about how a historian ends up studying a time that hasn’t even happened yet. And why being a “futurologist” is anything but straight-forward. Adriaan Duiveman is a postdoc at the Faculty of Arts, where he researches crises – and the stories citizens, authorities and opinion makers tell in and about them. Would you like to learn more about the future, the past and the present (or at least one way of looking at it)? Then Adriaan recommends the novel “Time Shelter” by Georgi Gospodinov. plusROOF: Steel-glass roof system with innovative SSG bonding

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Tim Seidel summarizes the plusROOF research project, which investigated the structural bonding of glass directly to steel substructures as a more efficient and design-flexible alternative to traditional complex and expensive skylight construction. The project identified a suitable polyurethane anti-corrosion coating that met adhesion standards, developed a parameter-based planning tool for double-curved designs, and validated the system through component tests. A 5.5x3.1 meter demonstrator successfully underwent rigorous testing for air permeability, driving rain tightness, and wind load resistance, achieving excellent performance and laying the foundation for future regulatory approvals and practical applications. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Tim Seidel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Introduction to Environmental Sustainability in Glass

In this video Rebecca Hartwell outlines the two key factors for sustainable glass design: material efficiency and energy efficiency. Material efficiency focuses on reducing the environmental impact from production to end-of-life, guided by the "9R framework". Energy efficiency concerns the glass's role in reducing a building's operational energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. The video explains that while advancements like double glazing and low-E coatings have improved energy efficiency, they often create complex, multi-material assemblies that are difficult to disassemble and recycle. Consequently, unlike container glass, most post-consumer flat glass is rarely recycled and is often downcycled or landfilled. A whole life-cycle perspective, balancing embodied and operational carbon, is essential for a sustainable glass future. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Rebecca Hartwell for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
