Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Grasduinen in waterbouw

Facing Floods: A stakeholder river management game

In river management, decisions are influenced by multiple stakeholders, each with different priorities, needs, and levels of influence. While collaboration is essential to solve river-related challenges, these differences create a complex dynamic environment in decision-making processes. This game simulates the challenges of river management by placing players in the roles of various stakeholders, each with their own goals, needs, and budgets. Players must work toward achieving their individual objectives while negotiating and cooperating with others, balancing personal interests with the shared responsibility of managing the river. The "Facilitator Guide" (see downloads) is designed to assist you in organizing and facilitating a game with 7 or more players, as well as preparing for the session. Additionally, you will find the various game materials required for gameplay. These materials need to be printed on A4 or A3 paper, with detailed printing instructions provided in the "Print Instructions" file. Learning goals • Experience the decision-making process related to complex systems as the development and management of river engineering infrastructure. • Get acquainted with the interests and goals of the involved stakeholders, realize that they may be conflicting or equivalent, and possibly bond with each other. • Debate the effectiveness and impacts of river interventions on the river system, environment and society, from the perspective of a stakeholder. • Appreciate the challenges of proposing a solution that integrates different river interventions and satisfies the goals of multiple stakeholders. • Reflect on the challenges of decision-making processes in complex systems. This game was developed for the River Engineering module, more specifically the unit River Functions and Management, of the MSc Civil Engineering program of the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft). However, the game is suitable for anyone interested in learning about stakeholder involvement and interactions in river management. More information about the use of the game can be found in the facilitator manual. Credits: this game was developed by the TU Delft Gamelab (website:https://copy.gamelab.tbm.tudelft.nl/).

Droughts in Rotterdam

With Climate Change, the frequency and intensity of droughts hitting the city of Rotterdam is increasing with time. 2019 was the third consecutive dry year in a row. With drought, comes a number of problems such as low water level in the Maas river which is the biggest source of drinking water for the city of Rotterdam (80%) and it effects the water quality, reduction in shipping capacity, weakening of dikes, salt intrusion, lowering of groundwater level which could lead to subsidence, etc. A concept map provided in the report highlights the STE (Social, Technological & Ecological) impacts of droughts on the city of Rotterdam. Possible solution practices include increasing the infiltration capacity of the city through blue-green networks, bioswales, vertical gardens, spraying water on dikes, building rainwater harvesting and storage infrastructure. Importance should also be given to the ethical implications of the solution strategies and also the usage of monitoring techniques to help mitigate any adverse effects of a potential disaster. The report also includes some links for further reading which covers a wide horizon of topics related to the effect and mitigation of droughts on the city of Rotterdam and the scope of public private responsibilities for climate change.

Pluvial floods in Rotterdam

This present report contains an overview of the effects and future adaptation strategies for a potential fluvial flood in the city of Rotterdam. To begin with, the presence of the river Nieuwe Maas through Rotterdam added up with the expected intense climate change effects in the future, pose a threat for a fluvial flood to occur. In this case, the mostly affected areas would be the unembanked ones such as Kop van Feijenoord and Noordereiland. Critical infrastructure such as dikes and railways while also properties, houses and the road network would face a great threat in a possible river flood. Until 2050, with the increased climate change implications such as extreme rainfalls and augmented river discharge, a probability of a fluvial flood will not remain at the low levels it is today. Furthermore, this kind of shock in the city of Rotterdam would have serious consequences on the society and create serious ethical dilemmas. Questions such as how equally would compensations be distributed or would the people just abandon their homes before the actual flood occurs, are only few from the ones that would rise. Nevertheless, essential adaptation strategies are already applied or being planned in order for Rotterdam to be able withstand these disastrous effects. Floating houses and reinforced dikes are some of the technical measures mentioned while there are specific governance arrangements that can be decided. These measures, can also have both a positive and negative effect on society, something that is also analysed. Moreover, some suggestions regarding the monitoring of the effects of the reported strategies and measures are included. In the last part of the report, understanding and discussion questions are added for readers.

Pluvial floods in Rotterdam-2

Rotterdam, a city located at the delta region and only 35 km to the sea, suffers from increasingly frequent intensive rainfall due to the climate change. The pluvial flood it causes overwhelms the urban drainage system first and then damages the transport systems. Residential and industrial infrastructures in the city and local ecology will be influenced as well. Ethically, it causes anxiety and conflictions among citizens, even triggers people’s unsatisfaction and denouncement. Solutions provided here focus on urban drainage and discharge system, water retention facilities, infiltration zones/ green spaces, protection of vulnerable infrastructures and government regulations. This report consists of seven parts: introduction to pluvial flood, affected parts of urban networks, condition till 2050 under climate change, ethical consequences, solution strategies, ethical implications of solutions and effect monitor.
