Mind Measuring Mind

Mind Measuring Mind explores the foundations of psychological methodology, ethical research practice, and the pivotal role of measurement in understanding behaviour and mental processes. Blending teaching material, scholarly context, and personal perspective, it opens a dialogue about the challenges and responsibilities of doing science when the subject and the scientist share the same mind. Why is psychological science different from other sciences? Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike most other fields, psychologists use their own mental processes to examine those of others. This self-referential nature, “mind measuring mind,” brings unique challenges for psychological measurement and the interpretation of research results. This book critically examines psychology as a science, exploring the empirical cycle and the teaching of methodology and statistics. In most academic psychology programmes, students are expected to participate as subjects in psychological studies. To support this, a series of PBL tutorials was developed to familiarise students with the empirical cycle and encourage discussion of validity, research methods, ethical standards, scientific communication, and potential threats to responsible, high-quality research. The materials in this book are based on those tutorials. This open textbook is designed for first- and second-year BSc Psychology students at Maastricht University, particularly those navigating the renewed curriculum’s emphasis on ‘Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking’ (SICT). It serves as a flexible guide for students following individual learning paths, including participation in faculty-led research experiments, reflection on the empirical cycle, and connecting practical experiences to theoretical concepts such as methodology, statistics, validity, ethics, and scientific communication. Ideal for self-study, group PBL sessions, and research practicums, the book helps bridge hands-on research involvement with classroom discussions, supporting competency development in psychological research.

Effective Thickness Method

In this video Martina Eliášová explains how the polymer interlayer between glass panes influences the performance of structural elements like floors and roofs. The key property is the interlayer's shear modulus, which is highly dependent on temperature and load duration. At high temperatures or under long-term loads, the shear modulus is low, and the glass panes behave more independently. At low temperatures or under short-term loads, the shear modulus is high, causing the panes to act as a single, monolithic unit. This variable behavior must be considered in design to accurately calculate stress and deflection. The video mentions that modern standards, like the effective thickness method in EN 16612, provide simplified analytical models to account for this partial shear interaction, leading to more economical and accurate designs than older, more conservative practices. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. Special thanks to Martina Eliášová for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection. Thermo-optical Properties

In this video, Francesco Fiorito, from the Polytechnic University of Bari, explains how glass interacts with solar radiation. When sunlight hits a window, some energy is transmitted inside, some is reflected, and some is absorbed. Two key values define a glass's performance: the Solar Factor (or g-value), which measures total heat gain, and the Visible Light Transmittance (VLT), which measures how much light passes through. While clear glass has high values for both, it can cause overheating. Tinted glass reduces heat gain but also makes interiors darker. Selective glass uses special coatings to block heat (a low g-value) while still allowing plenty of light (a high VLT). Other coatings, like low-emissivity (low-e), help with thermal insulation. The video concludes that selecting the right glass is essential for energy efficiency and comfort in buildings. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. FiReGlass - Glass beams with defined fire resistance

In this recorded presentation from glasstec 2024, Maximilian Möckel, from TU Dresden, discusses fire resistent glass beams. In the construction industry, the application of load-bearing laminated safety glass (LSG), such as glass beams or glass columns, is of particular importance in terms of preventive structural fire protection. LSG with a transformation temperature of individual components of up to 550 °C conse-quently loses its load-bearing capacity. In co-operation between Hero Fire GmbH, Taupitz GmbH & Co. KG and the Institute of Building Construction of the TUD Dresden University of Technology, LSG-beams were developed for use as load-bearing elements with defined fire resistance. The newly developed FiReGlass beam compris-es a load-bearing LSG core, which is protected from the fire exposure by two protection systems. The glass surfaces and lower glass edges are protected by an all-round protection system compris-ing fire protection gel and sacrificial panes. This system is integrated into the support structure. These new developments enable the realization of comprehensive fire protection and defined fire resistance. For further details, please refer to the linked publication. Special thanks to Messe Düsseldorf GmbH for providing the footage, and to Maximilian Möckel for contributing to the Open GLASSroom OER collection.
