Compass+ Systematically Searching for Literature

Systematic search is necessary when searching for literature for a systematic review or when you are conducting meta-analysis, for example. It helps you think about what exactly you want to find and increases the chances of getting a good search result. In this e-learning you learn how to set up a systematic review.

Introduction to data management as part of Open Science

Data management is part of the research cycle. It is crucial to think about it in the design phase of any experiment. This self-study module gives you hands on advice on what to do (and what NOT) with research data. It is not about (statistical) data analysis. This self-study module helps students get familiar with setting up their data management plan. As it’s an introduction to this topic, it is for students at beginner level. After completing this self-study module, you should be able to answer the following questions: What do I store? Where do I store? How can others understand what I stored? Why should I care?

Introduction to Stochastic Hydrology

Hydrologic systems are both complex and extremely heterogeneous in time and space. As hydrological models are simplified versions of reality, their predictions are by definition subject to uncertainty. The field of stochastic hydrology focuses on quantifying this uncertainty along with prediction. This book aims to present an overview of the field of stochastic hydrology at an introductory level. A wide range of topics and methods will be treated, while each topic and method is only treated at a basic level: descriptive statistics; probability and random variables; hydrological statistics and extremes; random functions; time series analysis; geostatistics; forward stochastic modeling; and state prediction and Kalman filtering. The book can be used for a 10-15-week course at third-year undergraduate or first-year graduate level.

Corpus Synodalium

Throughout the later Middle Ages, bishops across Latin Christendom promulgated provincial canons and diocesan statutes to guide the clergy and instruct the faithful. Offering direct access to more than 1700 of these texts (many transcribed directly from manuscripts or rare early printings), Corpus Synodalium allows users to explore and compare these texts using a variety of simple text analysis tools (including fuzzy and faceted searches, collocation, and time series). In addition, users can look for spatial patterns within the text corpus by exporting search results to the first-ever digital atlas of the dioceses and ecclesiastical provinces of late medieval Latin Christendom. The project website also includes a working repertory of the extant synodal statutes and provincial canons from 1200-1500, which lists their date, location, issuing authority, principal sources/editions, and more.

WindowMappr©

The WindowMappr© was developed to make spatial challenges connected to landscape and land use tangible, visible and easier to discuss in a low‑threshold way that stimulates interaction, reflection and co‑creation, both in educational settings and in practice, where digital participatory mapping tools are often too technical or distant for quick, collaborative use. Its simple and consistent setup makes it broadly applicable across contexts, supporting spatial thinking in education and facilitating the exchange of knowledge, experiences and perspectives in participatory processes without requiring technical expertise. This document provides a practical guide for constructing the WindowMappr© and outlines its basic principles of use.

Legal Network Analysis

How can complex legal systems, filled with interconnected cases, statutes, and actors, be understood through data? Legal Network Analysis offers law students and researchers a practical guide to mapping and interpreting relationships in legal data using the tools of network science. Building on the foundations of graph theory, this open textbook shows how relationships between cases, statutes, or states can reveal underlying structures in law that traditional methods often overlook. Whether analysing citation networks, treaties among nations, or the diffusion of legal norms, readers learn to translate legal questions into visual and quantitative insights. Developed by the Law and Tech Lab at Maastricht University, this resource combines conceptual clarity with applied learning. Each chapter blends concise explanations with interactive Jupyter notebooks, allowing readers to reproduce, modify, and experiment with examples in real time. Appendices include step-by-step guidance for data preparation, visualisation, and software setup; making the book equally accessible for newcomers and advanced students. Designed to support the Network Analysis course at Maastricht University, this textbook is also a valuable standalone introduction for anyone exploring the data-driven dimensions of law and policy.

Engineering Signal Analysis

Engineering Signal Analysis - Theory, is an introductory textbook on the analysis of signals in time and frequency. It takes an engineer’s perspective and discusses how to characterize, analyze and operate on signals. The basic theoretical concepts, Fourier series and transform, are explained in continuous time. It then introduces discrete-time signals, addressing how sampling and finite signal duration affect spectral analysis. It discusses the discrete Fourier transform and its use in spectral estimation. The book concludes with an introduction to linear systems and signal filtering.
