HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS CASE STUDY: First, please refer to the Teacher's Guide using the yellow "View Materials" button on the left pane. The teacher's guide outlines the purpose, contents, approach, case structure, and technical information of this case study. This case study was curated from other independently published open educational resources and from existing materials on this platform. These resources are also organized by domain. At the bottom of each resource's page, you can see both the city case study and SURF Resilience domain to which it belongs. Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This case study contains a teaching guide, five thematic foci, and a gaming simulation. In this case study, you will dive deeper into the resilience and sustainability in Chinese cities. You will see how issues like air pollution affect citizens' daily lives and how successful policies contribute to sustainability. With a high rate of urbanization, Chinese cities have resorted to using the Sponge City concept to successfully manage water. To deepen your knowledge, you can learn about other shocks and stresses facing Chinese cities in resilience trend reports. Finally, you can bring your knowledge into practice by diving into the game “Creators of Shanghai” which has been developed by TU Delft students.

Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This set contains a teaching guide, seven thematic foci, and gaming simulations. In this set, you will discover the challenges and opportunities provided by the concept of urban resilience on mitigating and preventing flooding. Examples of design considerations of hydraulic structures and spillways will show you how resilience can be integrated into urban planning and management. Then, you will dive into the topic of large waves, typhoons, storm surges, and tsunamis. You will see how one natural disaster can pose potential downstream risks for society, as exhibited by the 2011 tsunami and the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant failure. Moreover, you will see how tsunamis impact multiple urban subsystems such as transportation, buildings, sanitation, and environment. You will have the opportunity to think about solution strategies and their ethical considerations. Then, you will look into the process of post-disaster reconstruction after a disaster has uprooted existing systems. Lastly, you will see how man-made climate change has created alternative urban climates. You will also look into how to design for a better, more comfortable urban microclimate. End by playing related resilience games.

OVERVIEW: This case study contains a teaching guide, one theme titled 'Co-creation of Sustainable Cities,' seven short videos, and a gaming simulation. To get a better understanding of the co-creation structure in Kampala within the first theme, you can follow a number of lectures on stakeholder dynamics and how to analyze them, and what entails an effective stakeholder participation. Then, you will also see how sustainable cooking practices are helping to reduce air pollution in informal settlements. Finish the case study by playing the Invest in the Future game to experiment with designing urban areas for better climate change resilience.

Click on the case study or the domain name to navigate to the case study homepage or SURF Resilience collection, respectively. OVERVIEW: This case study contains a teaching guide, seven thematic foci, and a gaming simulation. In the first thematic focus, you will discover the dynamics of co-creation across multiple sectors such as air, smart grids, energy, mobility, green spaces, and water. In 'Amsterdam's Air Quality,' you will visit NGOs like the Waag Society where citizens use art, science, and technology to help address air pollution. Then, you will see how big data and the use of ICT may make aspects of life in Amsterdam more sustainable in 'Smart & Livable Cities.' You will learn how citizens help guard against the disappearance of green spaces, traveling to a buttercup farm where you will see how conflicting visions by different stakeholders are integrated to develop urban spaces. Finally, you will discover how a low-lying city like Amsterdam copes with intensifying rainfall in the 'Water Management & Climate Change' theme and learn about agent-based modelling for resilience. To experience this interdependence of different sectors, play the urban resilience game at the end of this set. You will see how disasters impact the urban system and experience the consequences of your choices on how to protect the city.

The resilience of an STE system can be affected by shocks and stresses. The severity of these shocks and stresses or how the system is affected may change due to climate change, socio-economic development and/or technological developments. TUDelft Environmental Engineering students were asked to study a specific shock or stress for a specific topic and analyze solution strategies to reduce the impact of the shock or stress in a “Trend Report”. In addition they added understanding and discussion questions to the trend reports. This makes these trend report an open education resource that can be used as a teaching material for 30-60 minutes to gain insight in typical shocks and stresses that affect resilience. This resource includes: Teaching guide and Lecture materials. Set of more than 30 city trend reports students.
