Cyber Attacks on Power Grids and Impact

This resource consist of 3 presentations and focus on the following learning objectives: Part 1 – Describe what is IEC 61850 standard and how it is applied in digital substations for power system automation and protection Part 2: – Explain the architecture of a digital substation for power grids that uses IEC 61850 – Analyse vulnerabilities, threats and cyber attack models targeting IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled Value protocols Part 3 – Analyse the impact of cyber attacks on power system operation and explain how they can lead to cascading failures (Part 3) – Recommend appropriate security controls to mitigate cyber attacks on power grids

Deconstructing Urban Resilience

This is a document intended for teachers with an introductory teaching activity in which students learn to recognize the presence of/potentials for resilient urban transformations. Students analyse a given urban space to identify elements that contribute to urban resilience, to devise spatial interventions that build resilience, and to critically reflect on those transformations. The activity is intended for BA and MSc students, but it can also be used as a base for teaching more advanced qualitative analysis of visual material (e.g. photographs of resilient urban spaces) at PhD level.

Case study: Flooding dam Oroville weir orifice

In February 2017, Oroville Dam's (USA) main and emergency spillways were damaged, prompting the evacuation of more than 180,000 people living downstream along the Feather River and the relocation of a fish hatchery. This lecture for students first describes the emergency situation, the repair and then the equitation (i.e. weir, orifice).
