Managing waste - a teaching game (Teacher version)

Students watch an NPO documentary on the problems and risks of waste processing in the Netherlands, and play a short game that challenges students to identify and capitalize on a key dynamic of these processes. This documentary and game can be the basis of discussion around meanings of waste and the real-life environmental problem it poses for environmental ethics and sustainability in theory and practice.

Low-traffic neighbourhoods - Teacher version

This case study asks students to examine the arguments made for and against the introduction of low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs). Students are asked to read a journalistic article about the controversies surrounding LTNs in neighborhoods in England during the COVID-19 lockdown. From this, students work together in small groups to identify arguments for and against LTNs, considering the strengths of the arguments presented. After a discussion of these arguments, students should consider how they would decide on this issue, if faced with it as an engineer and/or as a member of the community.

Ventilation systems in high-speed trains - Teacher version

This exercise analyses the cabin ventilation systems of high-speed trains to work toward creating a safe, comfortable and energy efficient interior climate. Due to a growing awareness of the health risks of traveling in shared spaces, train travel has gone down (during the Corona pandemic and in its aftermath). Because train travel is better for the environment and necessary for the continuance of the train company, train companies aim to provide better ventilated cabins to encourage travel without raising costs.

Offshore Drilling and the Culture of Risk - Teacher version

This exercise explores the complexity of risk-taking and ethical choices by looking at the dangers involved in a resource humans rely on heavily and asking what level of danger is acceptable for our everyday conveniences to remain available. Smart Grids and Inclusive Design

In this exercise, students will explore the possibility of designing smart energy grids using the approach of value-sensitive design. Rather than using a rule-based ethical theory to determine the best objective answer, students will approach the question with a focus on the ways that different members of society will be affected differently, specifically by looking at values and needs.

Degrowth vs. Ecomodernism

In this exercise, students will consider a prominent conceptual distinction in current debates about economy and sustainability: the opposition between Degrowth theory and Ecomodernism. This opposition is a useful one to think about new technologies, strategies for sustainability, and the future in general. After some introductory steps, students are tasked with creating an assignment about a certain technology they chose themselves.
