[ENG] Pressure cooker Transdisciplinarity – A theoretical approach

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to the theory of the why and what transdisciplinary education. You’ll learn why transdisciplinary education can be useful and what it means. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a class of students (all levels; any group size) as well as a team of educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in, for instance, transdisciplinary education improves the actual working with, or teaching of, it. How long – In-class activities take under one hour. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a system are and have them experience various examples of using systems thinking to explore a topic or question. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with systems thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of systems thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and a 10 minutes pre-class video.

Learning Activities mapping exercise for interdisciplinary education

This tool can be used to create an overview of how the various learning activities of an interdisciplinary course are organised throughout time. It can help create flow in a course, but can also help find obstacles or hiccups in the planning of a course.

Interdisciplinary Integration Techniques (animation)

This animation clip is an introduction to the integration techniques of Repko & Szostak (2021). The animation covers the six integration techniques using a fictional example about achievement pressure among young people in high schools. This video can be used in an (introductory) lecture to give students an idea of what integration of insights can look like in practice. You can then use the examples in the animation to further explain and discuss integration techniques. Another way for students is to watch the animation prior to the lecture. In lectures, you can refer back to it when further explaining and discussing the integration techniques.

Interdisciplinaire Integratietechnieken (animatie)

Interdisciplinary Writing Assignment

This interdisciplinary writing assignment is an example of how students can analyse and argue a complex problem from different perspectives. The assignment is discipline- neutral and can be adapted to different subject areas and themes. It can be chosen to be completed individually or, on the contrary, as group work. In this document you will also find an elaborate example concerning the disciplines law and linguistics.

Interdisciplinaire Schrijfopdracht

Object Orientation Pressure Cooker

What — This methodology fits research projects that use a concrete “surprising” object as the starting point of “more complex” inquiry. The methodology invites students: to make an inventory of different perspectives to study a central object, and understand what knowledge these perspectives will yield about particular elements of their research project topic; to understand the relations/connections between these various disciplinary perspectives and elements, and; to make an informed decision about which perspectives and elements to pursue and which ones to leave out For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a seminar/working group of students (bachelor 3, honours and ma/rma students) as well as educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in object orientation supports the appreciation of multi-perspectivity (identity dimension and/or social-interactive dimension of interdisciplinary learning) which aids in grasping defining elements of various disciplines (cognitive dimension). How long—Depending on the context, it can be done as a quick starter or as a class-filling activity. In-class activities take up to two and a half hours. Preparation at home takes around two hours. Pressure Cooker Design Thinking

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to design and design thinking. This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a design process are and have them experience one iteration of a design process. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with design thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of design thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and two 15 minutes pre- and post-class assignments Made by Nina Bohm On behalf of IDO

Organisational Guide Interdisciplinary Education

This guide is aimed at teachers that are looking to (re-)develop interdisciplinary or interdepartmental/interfaculty education. In addition it is useful for those teachers that intend to develop multi- or transdisciplinary educational initiatives that will have to work across departmental or faculty boundaries. This guide comprises the entire organizational design-, execution-, and evaluation process for educational endeavours. In addition, significant attention is given to the development of the content of the education, which is a process that may take place simultaneously with the organizational development, or take place separately. Content matters can be found in step 4. We recommend reading this guide in its entirety before starting with step 1. Although the steps are placed in a recommended order, in practice steps might overlap (in time) with others. Also, it will be beneficial per se to have an overview of ‘what’s to come’ before embarking on an educational (re-)development journey. The process of creating this guide is ongoing. We cannot anticipate every scenario, nor can overlook specific details. Therefore, if you run into any questions, or discover omissions that need to be remedied or added, discuss it with your colleagues and please be so kind as to alert the developers of this guide Caspar Schoevaars (c.m.schoevaars@uu.nl) or Margreet van der Ham (m.h.vanderham@uu.nl). Corrections, suggestions, gratitude and additional best practices are always welcomed!
