When we think about Rotterdam, or even the Netherlands in general, we think about how often it rains and how that would cause floods and trigger an overabundance of water in the water systems. But even under these conditions, there have been frequent periods of droughts in the country. Droughts have occurred in varying intensities in the past years, with 1976 being seen as one of the driest years, followed by 2003, where there had been huge losses incurred in various sectors, ranging from losses in the agricultural sector due to the shortage in water consumption to inland shipping losses and various others that are accounted for in following sections. Furthermore, the future impacts of the droughts have been analysed along with the consequences. Various solution
strategies that can be adopted to combat the stress have also been enumerated in the final chapter, along with the ongoing measures that are being undertaken to counter the stress and extenuate the effects and impacts caused by it in the city of Rotterdam. The ethical consequences caused by the possible implementation of the solution
strategies have been detailed along with the shortcomings in the monitoring system that is currently in place for drought early identification and warning.
