Smart cities can profoundly transform an urban system by using ICT technologies to promote sustainable practices. For example, to become carbon neutral, cities need to reform their energy system; this could be done using smart and decentralized solutions. However, there are many challenges to making this transition successful.
This set of videos and materials starts with an introduction to gathering and using spatial data and how it can be used. Then, it will give you an overview of smart grids, energy, and mobility systems, showing how a shift towards smart cities requires infrastructure and technological changes. This inevitably changes the social and political landscape as well. Citizens themselves play a crucial role in helping to co-create a more sustainable, smart urban system.
Then, we will look at the implications of smart systems when applied in a societal context. In the first module you will learn about the background and possibilities of agent based modeling applied in an urban context. Then you will learn about the threats that (smart) cities face from cyberattacks and what implications a successful cyberattack could have on the functioning of cities.
