Solid waste management in Tokyo

Due to the fast growth of population, industrialization, and economic development, this city generates a huge amount of solid waste, especially plastic waste. Major disposal methods include incineration, recycling, and landfill. However, the city is facing difficulties in solid waste management due to its limited landmass. Most of the wastes in Tokyo have been dumped in the Tokyo bay landfill since 1927. From the socio-economic perspective, public health is one main concern that influences the well-being and economic development of the nation. Web-based GIS, de-inking Technology, landfill gas recovery, and plasma technology are the solutions strategies to improve the resilience of the city. On the other hand, to implement these solutions, the government has to deal with the time constraint and opportunity cost.

Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.

Fragmentarium

Fragmentarium’s primary objective is to develop a digital library specialized for medieval manuscript fragment research. Although based on the many years of experience of e-codices — Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland, the Fragmentarium Digital Library has an international orientation. First and foremost it is conceived as a social platform for libraries, scholars and students to do scholarly work on fragments. It conforms to the latest standards set by digital libraries and will set new standards, especially in the area of interoperability. The web application contains a series of tools: A cataloging tool that enables libraries, collectors, researchers and students to gather and describe fragments via a CMS. A tool for curated and social tags, facets and keywords, allowing efficient research through comparison and cross-checking. A tool to link and assemble fragments offers the possibility to arrange cuttings, fragments of leaves, and individual leaves in any order.

River flooding in Jakarta

Since 1949, Jakarta is facing massive industrial and urban growth due to new colonisations at the Ciliwung River’s mouth. As Jakarta became one of the most important industrial centres in Indonesia, devastating effects of river floods also increased. These two factors may seem irrelevant at first sight, but actually urbanization stimulates river flood events to increase. With changing land use due to rapid urbanization, soil permeability decreases, retention time of water in the environment decreases, deforestation occurs. Also, when changes in precipitation patterns are combined with these factors, Jakarta faces catastrophic effects of river flooding. One of the most important factors that increases the damage of these natural disasters is the lack of infrastructure with appropriate legislations. Applicable solution strategies to decrease the damage of flood on Jakarta includes; institutional measures such as new legislations and public education and technical measures such as infrastructure installation, watershed planning, wastewater management, natural resources management. From an environmental perspective, this study emphasizes river flooding problems of Jakarta and brings solutions on increasing the resilience of the city for a sustainable future.
