The Pierre Kemp Collection

One of the most fascinating loners in twentieth-century Dutch poetry is Maastricht-born Pierre Kemp (1886-1967). In 1956 he was awarded the Constantijn Huygens Prize, followed in 1958 by the P.C. Hooft Prize. Maastricht University Library manages a large part of his personal estate. The Pierre Kemp Collection contains various types of objects, such as books (his personal library), letters, manuscripts, radio fragments, graphic work, a Liber Amicorum (a handwritten book of friends including graphic work by well-known artists), vinyl records, a red egg decorated by him with a poem in gold ink, a desk, and a record cabinet. Part of this collection has been placed in the library by the Pierre Kemp Foundation (Pierre Kemp Stichting), which aims to bring Kemp’s literary and visual heritage to the attention of a wide audience. As part of the national Connected Digital Heritage programme, the University Library aims to present the Pierre Kemp Collection to the widest possible audience in the most linked, open and enriched way possible. The Pierre Kemp collection has been made available (CC-BY license) in multiple representations: as presentation for humans via the website; as Linked Open Data in machine-readable JSON-LD format or SPARQL endpoint; as data set registration in the NDE datasetregister.

Object Based Teaching and Learning

Library collections don't just consist of (online) articles and books. At the University Library of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, we possess a wealth of special collections, from academic heritage to maps and globes. The objects from these collections are used in teaching and research. Through technology, such as 3D scanning and printing, we can present these objects even more vividly to education. For example, students will be able to pass replicas of ancient clay tablets through their hands. In addition, at the VU, numerous other models have been 3D printed and used in educational contexts in recent years. This publication encompasses a selection of the clay tablets of the VU special collections that were digitized as part of the project Digital Impressions, as well as other 3D printed objects, and a collection of educational resources for teaching with objects. Click on one of the two publications in this set to access the resources that you are looking for. Moreover, the link underneath presents you with more information on the Digital Impressions project on the VU website.

Where history meets modern

At Maastricht University Library, the use of literary sources from its Special Collections by students is promoted and facilitated through the development and organization of specialized research-based learning programs as part of the Wikipedia Education Program. The central aim of these learning programs is to educate students on the social relevance of the Special Collections, such as the Jesuit library, which contains books (on philosophy, history, anatomy, literature, theology, law, and various social sciences) dating back to the beginning of the sixteenth century. In addition, by participating in these programs, undergraduate students from various colleges are given the opportunity to develop their information literacy skills by gaining experience in conducting empirical literature research on primary historical sources and its publication through a popular open-access platform. Evaluations from students indicate that the unique combination of analyzing historical literature and the publication of their review on a modern open-access platform led to increased motivation, readership, sense of responsibility, and understanding about the importance of open-access knowledge transfer and valorization of information. In addition to the Wikipedia Education Program, Maastricht University has also been involved in a noneducational Wikimedia project: Wiki-Wetenschappers. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the activities, approaches, and evaluation of the Wikipedia Education Program and the Wiki-Scientists project at Maastricht University. This chapter is part of the book Wikipedia and Academic Libraries: A Global Project. The book contains 19 chapters by 52 authors from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. The chapters in this book are authored by both new and longtime members of the Wikimedia community, representing a range of experiences.

Dredging Engineering: Special Topics

In dredging, production estimating is carried out mainly with analytical physical models of the different dredging processes. Slurry transport of settling slurries and cutting processes in sand, clay and rock are already covered in two other books by the author. Other processes like hopper sedimentation and erosion, water jet fluidization, cutter head spillage, pump/pipeline dynamics and clamshell dredging are covered in this Special Topics Edition. New topics may be added in the near future.

Collection: Teaching on Open Educational Resources

This collection of workshop activities is designed by Utrecht University Library, in order to inform and encourage educators to work with open educational resources. Through different interactive assignments, workshop participants learn about the definitions of related concepts, where and how to search for OER, what the advantages are, and what copyright and licensing issues need to be addressed before publishing.

Digital replicas of clay tablets from the VU special collections

This collection consists of 16 digitized clay tablets from the VU special collections, as well as some other 3D printed objects that were created over the last few years. The clay tablets have been 3D scanned for you to use in education, both digitally and physically. Every publication below includes: A picture of the clay tablet. A 3D model that can be used digitally and can be 3D printed. Technical instructions for 3D printing the model. Information on the original clay tablet and a link to the original object in the VU image base. Some of the digitized clay tablets are linked to a lesson plan on how to use them in higher and secondary education. If this is the case, the publication of that digitized clay tablet will include a link to that lesson plan. Moreover, the links underneath lead you to an information page on the possibilities for 3D printing at the VU, the VU image base, in which the original clay tablets are metadated and a practical outreach about the 3D scanning process.

3D Heart models on NIH 3D print exchange website

The NIH 3D Print Exchange is a platform provided by the National Institutes of Health offering open 3D models related to biomedical science. This link refers to the heart collection on the platform. It has many models of the heart with a special interest on congenital heart diseases. The models have been created directly from patient MRI data. The models are offered under a Creative Commons license or are released to the Public Domain. The models are offered in common open 3D formats (STL, VRML, X3D and Blender), from which they can be printed or included in a viewer application.

CORSAIR Online Collection Catalog (The Morgan Library & Museum)

Named after Pierpont Morgan’s yacht, CORSAIR is a single database providing unified access to over 250,000 records for medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, rare and reference books, literary and historical manuscripts, music scores, ancient seals and tablets, drawings, prints, and other art objects. Records continue to be added for the balance of the collection as well as for new acquisitions. The depth of detail is unusual for an online catalog. Many records include summaries of the content of individual letters, lengthy notes about provenance, and detailed descriptions of bindings. Specialized indexes enable researchers to find all of the Morgan’s holdings associated with a given name, date, or place. For example, with a single search a scholar interested in Dickens can find records for manuscripts and letters in the author’s hand, early printed editions of his novels, original illustrations, photographs, and personal possessions such as Dickens’ ink pot and cigar case. CORSAIR also serves as the gateway to one of the largest repositories of medieval images on the Internet, providing access to more than 57,000 digitized images from the Morgan’s collection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Users may page through every illustrated leaf within a manuscript, or search for individual images by place or date of creation, artist’s name, illustration type, and subject. The images and descriptions may be accessed directly through CORSAIR, or by visiting Images from Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts.
