Leiden - Video Colonoscopy: transition from ileum to caecum - English labels

This video shows a part of a colonoscopy, with normal anatomy: it starts in the terminal ileum, where the circular folds and the intestinal villi can be seen and are clearly indicated. Then the scope is gradually retracted, passing the ileocaecal junction to arrive in the caecum. In the ascending colon the semilunar folds can be seen and are indicated, one can also see the absence of villi here. The clear endoscope imagery with high magnification in a life person, allows to see the individual villi and the difference between the circular and the semilunar folds in a way that is impossible to attain in an anatomical dissection lab. Schoenmakers, MD, dept. of Anatomy and Embryology, both at Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands.

Dictionary of the Welsh Language (Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru)

GPC is the only standard historical dictionary of the Welsh language. It is broadly comparable in method and scope to the Oxford English Dictionary. It presents the vocabulary of the Welsh language from the earliest Old Welsh texts, through the abundant literature of the Medieval and Modern periods, to the huge expansion in vocabulary resulting from the wider use of Welsh in all aspects of life in the last half century. This vocabulary is defined in Welsh, and English equivalents are also given. Detailed attention is given to variant forms, collocations, and etymology. The work is based on an ever-expanding collection of over two million citation slips gathered from a range of texts over many years.

Lecture: Introduction General Explainable AI

Understand, analyze and elaborate upon the importance of XAI in the modern world. Differentiate between transparent and opaque machine learning models. Categorize and discuss approaches to explainability XAI based on model scope, agnosticity, data types and explanation techniques. Discern, investigate and discuss the trade-off between accuracy and interpretability. Summarize and understand the working principles and mathematical modeling of XAI techniques like LIME, SHAP, DiCE, LRP, counterfactual and contrastive explanations. Expand on possible applications of XAI techniques like LIME, SHAP, DiCE, LRP to generate explanations for black-box models for tabular, textual, and image datasets.

Measure Sustainability: LCA

In this video, Angelica Rota explains the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and its specific application to glass products. The LCA is a standardized process that evaluates a product's environmental impact from raw material extraction ("cradle") to final disposal ("grave"). The assessment follows four phases: defining the goal and scope, conducting a life cycle inventory, assessing the environmental impacts, and interpreting the results. For construction products like glass, the life cycle is divided into modules covering production, use, end-of-life, and potential benefits from recycling. The findings of an LCA are often published in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a verified document that communicates transparent environmental data. For flat glass, the manufacturing stage is the most environmentally intensive, contributing the vast majority to its global warming potential due to the high energy required to melt raw materials. Increasing the use of recycled glass cullet is a key strategy for reducing this impact, as it significantly lowers the energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions of the melting process. Understanding LCA is crucial for identifying environmental hotspots and driving more sustainable practices in glass production and use. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project. MOOC Open data, what is it and how can I benefit? Best practices for open data in Croatia

The course provides an overview of all aspects of open data: technical and non-technical. It describes the management of open data, shows the best practices for working with open data in Croatia and beyond, and enables understanding of all phases of the open data life cycle. It is intended for (1) users of open data, (2) providers of open data and decision-makers, (3) students and researchers, and (4) the general public interested in learning something new. This MOOC is designed as a self-paced asynchronous course without time limits; through materials and various activities (lessons, video-clips, conversations with stakeholders from Croatia, quizzes and interactive tasks), the participants take part in accordance with their time possibilities. It takes 10 to 20 hours of work to complete the course, depending on the scope of the chosen topics: for users or data providers. Upon completion of the course, it is possible to download a corresponding certificate of completed units for users and/or data providers. Access to the course is free, with prior simple registration. The course is published under the open license Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 and - in the spirit of openness promoted in the course - it can be reused, changed and adapted to one's own needs.

Droughts in Rotterdam

With Climate Change, the frequency and intensity of droughts hitting the city of Rotterdam is increasing with time. 2019 was the third consecutive dry year in a row. With drought, comes a number of problems such as low water level in the Maas river which is the biggest source of drinking water for the city of Rotterdam (80%) and it effects the water quality, reduction in shipping capacity, weakening of dikes, salt intrusion, lowering of groundwater level which could lead to subsidence, etc. A concept map provided in the report highlights the STE (Social, Technological & Ecological) impacts of droughts on the city of Rotterdam. Possible solution practices include increasing the infiltration capacity of the city through blue-green networks, bioswales, vertical gardens, spraying water on dikes, building rainwater harvesting and storage infrastructure. Importance should also be given to the ethical implications of the solution strategies and also the usage of monitoring techniques to help mitigate any adverse effects of a potential disaster. The report also includes some links for further reading which covers a wide horizon of topics related to the effect and mitigation of droughts on the city of Rotterdam and the scope of public private responsibilities for climate change.
