Byzantium & Friends | 134. Peer-review: the good, the bad, and the amusing, with Tina Sessa and Marion Kruse Thursday Apr 17, 2025

A conversation with Tina Sessa (The Ohio State University) and Marion Kruse (University of Cincinnati) on the process of peer-review in the humanities: what it's for, how it can be done well, and where it can go awry. The conversation is based on many decades of collective experience of peer-review, on all sides of the process.

Doing the literature review: The literature review: why?

The literature review: why? These e-modules about Doing a literature review explain why literature reviews are needed, how you can conduct one and how to report. The focus is the literature review within a dissertation or thesis, but many of the ideas are transferable to other kinds of writing, such as a peer-reviewed publication (typically in a journal, or - depending upon the discipline - as a book chapter), or a report resulting from a research project or other commissioned research. Doing the literature review: Writing & structuring

Writing & structuring Making a plan early in the process of designing the literature review helps to keep your writing focussed and on schedule. Researching the deadlines, resources, and constraints at university, graduate school and faculty levels will provide you with the outline of your plan. Often, scholarship providers or research funders set deadlines for the delivery of intermediate products. Structure A literature review has a more or less predictable structure. For journal articles, the opening page usually contains information about the author(s): your association with a university or research organization, contact details, a brief description of your role or function, etc. In Ph.D. theses, chapters of roughly equal size, are preceded by front matter (title page, declaration, abstract acknowledgment, contents pages) and also followed by end matter (references and appendices). Organization of the chapter(s) Once you have ordered the basic topics, consider how you will present the sources themselves. Choose an organizational method to focus the literature review section. Finding your voice! The task of shaping a logical and effective report of a literature review is challenging. Some useful guidance on how to approach the writing up is given by Wellington et al. (2005:87)[1]: Rewriting your draft Since you spend a substantial part of your time writing and rewriting your manuscript, often within set deadlines, time management is of the essence. In the initial stage, you have to deal with getting the structure, balance and focus right and finding your voice. Related. Suggested.

Systematic review as a research method

A systematic review is a research method used to answer a very specific research question. Scoping reviews ask broader questions such as “What is already known about certain practices/theories etc.?” In this workshop you will learn more about: • Different types of reviews • Phases and stages of a review • Tools for your review process. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Search for systematic reviews on your own research topic. Select at least one systematic review and one other type of review. • Read the method section of the articles you have found. Use the PRISMA checklist to evaluate on the authors' method. What items of the method are according to PRISMA, and which items are you missing? You're also invited to take a look at the workshop "Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers" It'll give you a great foundation before moving on to the workshop about systematic review as a research method. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up a good systematic review in order to find relevant literature.
