Navigating the Landscape of Blended Higher Education

In recent years, blended teaching formats have become increasingly important in higher education. Designing effective blended education is challenging and requires a profound knowledge of digital tools and technologies, as well as the didactical proficiency to deploy them effectively and efficiently within the learning environment. However, little is known about didactical design principles to support teachers in creating an effective blended design. This chapter reports on the combined results of two independently conducted extensive literature reviews that investigated (a) didactical strategies, methods, and techniques concerning online education in the existing empirical research on higher education, and (b) the effects of different blended teaching formats, compared to face-to-face education, on learning outcomes and/or psychosocial outcomes in higher education students. It was found that blended education can enhance student achievement and psychosocial well-being, yet that the instructional approach plays a crucial role. Combining the insights of both studies has subsequently led to a series of evidence-informed recommendations to design effective blended education with a view to the broad development of students. Readers will be provided with practical guidance on how to implement these design principles in educational practice.

PleitVRij presentaties

Fake news and disinformation training

In these times of information overload and social media, information is spread faster and through more channels. This applies to information you use for your work, study and private life. However, not all information you come across while scrolling through news and social media is equally reliable. You can also encounter fake news, especially on social media. Without correct information you cannot form a good and well-founded opinion. The ability to critically assess information has therefore become increasingly important. In this training you will learn how to do that.

Introduction to particle and continuum mechanics

In Introduction to particle and continuum mechanics, we study the classical physics of both collections of particles and continuous media. Taking Newton’s laws of motion as our axioms, we develop the theory of motion without the need for prior knowledge, with a particular focus on the laws of conservation of energy, momentum, and angular momentum. The relevant mathematics is provided in an appendix. The text contains various worked examples and a large number of original problems to help the reader develop an intuition for the physics.

Maldwyn

The origins of this database can be traced back to the work of Elizabeth J. Louis Jones and Henry Lewis in their Index to the Poetry of the Manuscripts, published by University Wales Press in 1928. The work was subsequently expanded with funding from the Board of Celtic Studies, who sponsored the production of the Index to the Strict Meter Poetry of the Manuscripts, in 12 volume sets, to research institutions in 1978. The work resumed in 1987, under the sponsorship of the British Academy, and in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and The National Library. The field was extended to include every Welsh poem found in a manuscript written before 1830, in strict and free meter, whether it was attributed to an author or not. Search fields and print sources were added, and the data was converted into an electronic format. In 1991 the project came under the auspices of the National Library of Wales. Some work was carried out on the manuscripts to confirm that their contents were recorded in the database. The work of expanding the Index ended in 1995, and the adapting and correcting of data ended in 2000, but the work is still far from complete. In March 2021 it was neccessary to end the usual access to the Index website due to many security issues with the website. Until a long term solution to this problem is found, we will be making the data available here for you to download and conduct your own search. The data is available in the following formats: Maldwyn Data (Excel file) Copyright; Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies. Licence CC-BY 4.0 To search the database, enter your search term into the light green search box and press ENTER. This will search every column of the database. Entries that match your search term will be highlighted in orange. To see only matching entries, use any of the drop down filter menus in row 3 to select 'Filter by Colour' and select the orange fill. Remember to clear this filter before your next search. Digital Bodleian

The Bodleian Libraries’ collections are extraordinary and significant—both from a scholarly point of view and as material that has an historic and aesthetic richness that holds value for non-academic users. Each year the Libraries serve more than 65,000 readers, over 40% of them from beyond the University, while its critically-acclaimed exhibitions attract almost 100,000 visitors annually. In an effort to make portions of our collections open to a wide variety of users from around the world for learning, teaching and research, the Bodleian Libraries have been digitizing library content for nearly twenty years. The result is over 650,000 freely available digital objects and almost another 1 million images awaiting release. Like many academic libraries, though, our freely available digital collections have been placed online in project-driven websites, with content stored in discrete ‘silos’, each with their own metadata format, different user interfaces, and no common search interface enabling users to discover content or navigate across collections. Some of our collections are linked at portal pages, but each collection remains, with a few exceptions, isolated and difficult to search. In addition, only a few collections offer a machine-readable interface, or any way to link their data with similar data in other Bodleian collections, or with collections at other institutions. Digital.Bodleian aims to solve these problems by: Bringing together our discrete collections under a single user interface which supports fast user-friendly viewing of high resolution images. Standardizing the metadata for each collection to facilitate faceted browsing and searching across collections. Converting all of our images in a variety of formats to JPEG2000 and migrating them to a robust scalable storage infrastructure. Allowing users to tag and annotate images and group together content into their own virtual collections which can be shared with other users. Allowing users to export metadata and images. All of these tasks have been carried out using standards-compliant file formats and methods and with a view to future expansion, scalability and robustness.

De diepte in. Inzicht in communicatie
