Critical Thinking in Legal Education (article & toolkit) - by Bart van Klink

Critical thinking is generally considered to be one of the central goals – if not the ultimate goal – of education. Critical thinking, as part of liberal learning, is done primarily for its own sake, for the sheer pleasure of thinking against the grain, exploring new ideas and thereby contributing to the development of scientific knowledge. The liberal conception of critical thinking is under threat, since education is nowadays turned into some form of social engagement. Increasingly, academic education is conceived in instrumental terms as a means to achieve some non-academic end: to create responsible ‘academic citizens’, who are committed to the values of diversity and inclusion and who are engaged in solving contemporary social problems. Against this tendency, this article defends a liberal conception of critical thinking in academic legal education and addresses three questions: (i) what is critical thinking? (ii) why do we need critical thinking? and (iii) how can we, as teachers, promote critical thinking in our students? Finally, it raises the question of whether a liberal conception of critical thinking rules out any kind of social engagement as pursued by universities in the present day.

Critical and scientific thinking

Critical thinking is one of the biggest hiatuses in our education system. Learning to distinguish sense from nonsense is of great importance in the information age that we live in. In a systematic way, this book helps you to gain insight into, and subsequently eliminate, the most important reasoning errors that we all tend to make. It also helps you to debunk weak and fallacious arguments and unreliable information. In addition to understanding what critical and scientific thinking entails, you will learn more about what makes science reliable. In times of skepticism regarding science, where (sometimes dangerous) pseudoscientific and conspiracy theories run rampant, this is particularly important. Critical thinking is not a matter of intellectual preference or even self-interest (although one certainly benefits from thinking critically). It is first and foremost a matter of moral and social responsibility. Better thinking leads to a better world. With this book I hope to contribute to that important goal and you, dear student or reader, can do the same!

This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with what the characteristics of a design process are and have them experience one iteration of a design process. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with design thinking, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size). Why – Guided training in integration of design thinking in a research project. How long – Approximately 2-2,5 hours in class and two 15 minutes pre- and post-class assignments Made by Nina Bohm On behalf of IDO

Design for critical reflection on Social Media Platforms

This exercise uses a value-sensitive design approach towards redesigning social media platforms for a different purpose: from being predominantly spaces of entertainment, social media platforms can become spaces of epistemic engagement with information in a fruitful manner by fostering the user’s critical reflection in engaging with information found on social media. The exercise challenges students to redesign user interactions on social media platforms in such a way that explicitly fosters reflective thinking for users about the information that they find online. Note: this exercise can be used in a suite of exercises on social media platform design, together with the Fake news exercise and the Design for information quality exercise.

In twee nieuw ontwikkelde vakken staat expliciet onderwijs in kritisch denken vaardigheden centraal.

Infovaders: A game for teaching information literacy skills in the age of AI and information overload

Earth as you know it is no more. You inhabit a new planet and are tasked with designing its information landscape. What values do you deem important? And can you make wise choices in an age of information overflow and artificial intelligence, when truth gets more and more confused with fiction? What will academia look like and will access still be open? The rise of the applications of AI, Open Science and an increase in the amount of information we receive and how we receive it ask powerful critical thinking skills of today's students. This educational board game, challenges players to critically think about what an ideal information landscape would look like. In this session, we will discuss how this game can be implemented in teaching. If you survive... The information landscape is continuously changing. Infovaders is a dilemma game to make University Students aware of how certain changes in this information landscape (how information is found, searched, evaluated and published) impact society and academic research.
