Co-creation of Sustainable Cities

This set contains a series of 6 short (<15 min web lectures on ' Co-creation of Sustainable Cities' (see https://online-learning.tudelft.nl/courses/citizens-co-creating-sustainable-cities/) Around the world, major challenges of our time such as population growth and climate change are being addressed in cities. Here, citizens play an important role together with governments, companies, NGOs and researchers in creating social, technological and political innovations for achieving sustainability and resilience. Citizens can be co-creators of sustainable cities when they can engage in city politics or in the design of the urban environment and its technologies and infrastructure. In addition, citizens influence and are influenced by the technologies and systems that they use every day. Sustainability is thus a result of the interplay between technology, policy and people’s daily lives. Understanding this interplay is essential for creating sustainable cities. This set provides an overview of the dynamics of co-creation for sustainable cities worldwide. In different contexts, different forms of co-creation are preferred in specific urban systems. These materials will provide you with an understanding needed to investigate how water, waste, energy, air, food, mobility, and green spaces have a vast effect on city life. Additionally, the videos will teach you about the dynamics of co-creation and the key principles of citizens interacting with service providing companies, technology and infrastructure developers, policy makers and researchers. You will gain an understanding of major types of co-creation and their interdependence with their socio-technical and political contexts. You will become equipped to indicate how you can use co-creation to develop innovative technologies, policy arrangements or social practices for a sustainable city in your own community. You will demonstrate this by developing an action plan, research proposal or project idea. Basic knowledge of sustainability in urban settings, urban environmental technology and urban management is assumed. These materials relate to the collection "Governance and Institutional Arrangements of Complex STE Systems."

Co-creation of Sustainable Cities: Overview

Co-creation of sustainable cities is a broad topic. In this video, Gert Spaargaren will introduce you to the key concepts that will be studied during the course. The importance of social and technological innovations, the fact that citizens are not alone as co-creators and the different forms of co-creation are introduced in a global, inter- and trans-disciplinary setting. These concepts are essential in understanding the transition processes from today’s cities to the envisioned sustainable cities of the future. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Design policies; governance arrangements and coordination structures for resilience planning and response addressing policy-making; public private partnerships and civic engagement. DURATION: 1 short video (~6 minutes long)

Co-creation Workshop: A manual for facilitators

This document is a teacher/facilitator manual for a workshop on co-creation (duration 1.5h). The manual has been designed for a setting in which students support each other’s research proposal design. This set-up (content and schedule) and suggested tools for co-creation can also be used in various other co-creative settings. The applied methods for co-creation touch upon various learning mechanisms of boundary crossing: Identification to learn to know each other including other people’s backgrounds and interest; Reflection where it comes to walk in another’s shoes and support other participants’ learning; and Transformation because of the intention to co-create ‘1+1=3’ proposals, in the sense that students aim to co-create really innovative proposals, across the boundaries of what an individual student might come up with.

Co-creation on Kampala's Air Quality

Dr. Patience Mguni and Dr. Bas van Vliet reflect on the forms of co-creation for more sustainable cooking practices in the slums of Kampala. They highlight this section’s most important lessons and give an outlook on the future. What do you think is needed for a transition towards clean cooking practices? Learning Objectives: Understand ways citizens of Kampala are co-creating sustainable solutions to air quality issues Explain shocks and stresses on critical services and infrastructures (CSIs) of STE systems resulting from a range of disastrous events.

Chapter 3 Practical tips for trustworthy OER reuse, adaptation and co-creation

After reading this chapter, you will be able to: Evaluate the quality and suitability of existing OER using relevant criteria, frameworks, and quality assurance approaches. Identify key copyright and licensing considerations when reusing, adapting, remixing, and sharing OER. Apply appropriate open licensing and attribution practices when creating, adapting, and sharing OER. Recognise the value of student–staff–library collaboration in the creation and development of OER. Identify approaches and conditions that can support successful collaborative and co-creative OER practices.

WindowMappr©

The WindowMappr© was developed to make spatial challenges connected to landscape and land use tangible, visible and easier to discuss in a low‑threshold way that stimulates interaction, reflection and co‑creation, both in educational settings and in practice, where digital participatory mapping tools are often too technical or distant for quick, collaborative use. Its simple and consistent setup makes it broadly applicable across contexts, supporting spatial thinking in education and facilitating the exchange of knowledge, experiences and perspectives in participatory processes without requiring technical expertise. This document provides a practical guide for constructing the WindowMappr© and outlines its basic principles of use.

Living Labs

In sustainable urban transitions, innovation is often as much of a key concept as co-creation. The combination of these two concepts results in a huge potential for developing effective, trans- and interdisciplinary sustainable solutions that count on the support of the public given its involvement in the co-creation process. Living labs are niches in which this combination takes place: multiple actors and users collaborate to develop experimental innovations in a real-life setting. In the following video, Kris Gyselle Steen, researcher from Urban Living Labs, will explain how living labs function, with a special focus on the variety of roles that actors can adopt during the co-creation process. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Design policies; governance arrangements and coordination structures for resilience planning and response addressing policy-making; public private partnerships and civic engagement. DURATION: 1 short video (~5 min long)

Citizen Participation in City Politics

Public authorities can invite citizens to participate in the co-creation of city politics. But, how can citizens participate? In the following video, Tamara Metze explains how citizens do not only participate by voting in the local elections. Secondly, the participation ladder will be introduced as a framework to assess the degree of participation that public authorities allow and enhance from their citizens in the co-creation process. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Design policies; governance arrangements and coordination structures for resilience planning and response addressing policy-making; public private partnerships and civic engagement. DURATION: 1 short video (~5 min long)

Get to Know Sam's City

There are many people in the world called Sam. What if we visited some of them? It is probable that we would observe that the Sams in different cities in the world live their everyday life in different ways. Through their everyday life, each Sam engages in different forms of co-creation within the diverse socio-technical systems of their city. Their role as co-creating citizens contributes to important sustainable transitions. Let’s have a look at how some Sams of the world do their part! LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Define and describe systems thinking for resilience engineering. DURATION: 1 short video (~5 min long)
