Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers

A comprehensive workshop on effective search strategies for literature identification. During the workshop we will examine your search processes and the key components of a systematic search strategy. Particular attention will be paid to: • Academic databases • Developing a search strategy • Formulating and combining search terms • Academic and grey literature search approaches • Tools that may be useful for your literature search At the end of the workshop you will be able to use different search techniques and strategies. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Try to find academic literature on your research topic. • Record your search activities, including search terms, search operators, filters and databases used, and publications found. • If you like, you can look at the checklist for reporting literature searches in systematic reviews. This will give you an idea of how to report a search. During the meeting we will discuss your experiences and relate them to effective search techniques and strategies. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up good search strategies in order to find relevant literature.

Doing the literature review: Selecting databases

Selecting databases You have to decide which databases you will use in your literature search. To limit location bias, you have to use more than one database. Make an informed choice! In this module we list some database features you can take into account. What about Google Scholar? Google Scholar indexes websites with scholarly articles – including websites of academic publishers, university repositories and personal websites of researchers. Related.

Beyond Google Scholar

Students often struggle to find relevant literature for their thesis projects. The main aim of this tutorial is two-fold, namely to teach students (1) how to find relevant literature using various databases and search strategies and (2) how to critically reflect on the role of digital databases and Generative AI tools in their search process. The package includes a lecturer’s manual and two versions of the same tutorial: one with steps in Excel and one without. The tutorial can be delivered as an in-class workshop (2–3 hours) or assigned as a take-home assignment. The databases and tools used in this tutorial include Zotero, Google Scholar, Project MUSE, JSTOR, ChatGPT, and Excel. The tutorial can be used in any higher education classroom and is particularly suitable for courses that prepare students for writing a BA or MA thesis.

This is the textbook (reader) for the course Introduction to Academic Research, taught at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. This is a compilation of four chapters from 3 different textbooks that are classified as open educational resources (OER) and together provide the accompanying literature for the course. The chapters cover the following topics: Academic research and the research process What are spatial sciences? Theories in scientific research Research ethics The original sources of the chapters in this textbook are mentioned on every page. These texts are taken almost verbatim from the mentioned sources; small adjustments have been made for the consistency of referencing, providing a little context, or aligning the numbering of sections.

Doing the literature review: Writing & structuring

Writing & structuring Making a plan early in the process of designing the literature review helps to keep your writing focussed and on schedule. Researching the deadlines, resources, and constraints at university, graduate school and faculty levels will provide you with the outline of your plan. Often, scholarship providers or research funders set deadlines for the delivery of intermediate products. Structure A literature review has a more or less predictable structure. For journal articles, the opening page usually contains information about the author(s): your association with a university or research organization, contact details, a brief description of your role or function, etc. In Ph.D. theses, chapters of roughly equal size, are preceded by front matter (title page, declaration, abstract acknowledgment, contents pages) and also followed by end matter (references and appendices). Organization of the chapter(s) Once you have ordered the basic topics, consider how you will present the sources themselves. Choose an organizational method to focus the literature review section. Finding your voice! The task of shaping a logical and effective report of a literature review is challenging. Some useful guidance on how to approach the writing up is given by Wellington et al. (2005:87)[1]: Rewriting your draft Since you spend a substantial part of your time writing and rewriting your manuscript, often within set deadlines, time management is of the essence. In the initial stage, you have to deal with getting the structure, balance and focus right and finding your voice. Related. Suggested.

Doing the literature review: Citation information

Use citation information to find literature You can use the reference list of an article or book to find related literature (snowball method). Citation databases Scopus and Web of Science also offer the option to follow the chain of references in the other direction: which articles have cited a particular article or book (cited reference search)? Activity: Citation information in Web of Science. Related.
