Pressure Cooker Travelling Concepts

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to travelling concepts as an integrative research methodology. Travelling concepts can be used for comparing disciplinary notes and for synthesizing purposes in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, and research. Participants practice integration per se as well as travelling concepts itself. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a class of students (all levels; any group size) as well as a team of educational developers or teachers. Why – Guided training in, for instance, travelling concepts improves the actual working with, or teaching of, it. How long – In-class activities take under two hours. Preparation at home takes up two hours.

Explore and refine your topic: Map concepts

Why use concept mapping? Concept maps or tables help you to brainstorm ideas, focus your topic, and identify possible keywords (aka search terms) before using the library's databases to search for articles for your literature review. Finding search terms To find relevant words, you can use a dictionary or encyclopedia (Wikipedia is very useful for this). You can also do a quick search for journal articles and have a look at the results list. Concept tables Organize the words you have for the concepts in your research topic in lists and then in categories per key concept in a concept table. Cmap tools Cmap software is a result of research conducted at the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC). Related. Suggested.

Pressure Cooker Interdisciplinary Research Process (IRP)

What – This pressure cooker is an introduction to the Interdisciplinary Research Process (IRP) by Repko & Szostak (2021). This pressure cooker can be used to quickly familiarize a group of people with interdisciplinary research and have them experience the integration process themselves. For whom – The format can be used (and adjusted) for a team of teachers that are not yet familiar with the IRP, as well as a group of students (all levels; any group size) . Why – Guided training in integration of disciplinary insights. How long – Approximately 3 hours.

A virtual research cruise to characterise the North Sea water system

In this assignment you will learn to set up your own virtual research cruise, during which you will ‘measure’ biophysical oceanographic properties and analyse them. The ocean is not an easy place to perform measurements. It covers a vast area, is not always easy to access (think about the deep ocean), and measuring comes with obstacles. We’re bound by shiptime (which is expensive), the types of instruments that are available (they may break), the weather (storms), sea-ice, seasickness… As research cruises are time consuming and costly, it is important to plan very well. One tool that can help scientists in planning their cruise is VirtualShip. In this assignment, you will use VirtualShip and design a measurement campaign in the North-West European Shelf region, aimed at measuring a cross-section from the open ocean, via the North Sea, towards the coast of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. Included is a rubric for grading the student reports.

Explore and refine your topic: Various types of information

What type of information do you need? Once you have a well-defined research topic, the next step is to decide on the type of information you need. Check the requirements of your assignment for information types you need to refer to in your paper. It also helps to think about the purpose of your paper and the audience you are writing for. Where can you find it? The University Library provides access through various discovery tools to a wide range of information sources including books, magazines, journal articles and financial data. Exercise: Information types Try matching information types with information needs. Related Suggested

This is a compilation of four chapters from 3 different textbooks that are classified as open educational resources (OER) and together provide the accompanying literature for the course. The chapters cover the following topics: Academic research and the research process What are spatial sciences? Theories in scientific research Research ethics The original sources of the chapters in this textbook are mentioned on every page. These texts are taken almost verbatim from the mentioned sources; small adjustments have been made for the consistency of referencing, providing a little context, or aligning the numbering of sections.

Communicating Research to the Public: Coronavirus, joggers, and social media

This case study asks students to use the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and Adina L. Roskies’ article “Neuroimaging and Inferential Distance” (2007) to discuss and assess a recent controversial example of communicating scientific findings to the public during Covid-19. Students prepare the materials in advance of class, where they work in small groups to assess the case in light of the two sources. The class reconvenes for a plenary discussion in which they generate tips and tops, or good and bad practices, for integrity in the communication of scientific findings in the era of social media.
