Flipping education in research methods

Within the project 'Flipping Education in Research Methods' micro-lectures were developed based on PowerPoint presentations. In addition assignments were formulated to practise the learning outcomes. It also includes a teacher manual to adapt the course material for your own lectures. This manual contains a description for using micro lectures and assignments created in the context of the FERM project, introducing flipped classroom in the context of research methods training. Within the project 'Flipping Education in Research Methods' micro-lectures were developed based on PowerPoint presentations. In addition assignments were formulated to practise the learning outcomes. Topics: • Research question • Concepts • Theory • Research designs • Evaluating causal claims • Scale index construction and assessment • Measurement • Data collection methods • Sampling • Data analysis (descriptive) • Data analysis inference • Ethics • Applied research • Philosophy of science • Problem analysis This Open Educational Course on research methods in social sciences is developed with support of Ministry of Education, Culture and Science Netherlands. Quantitative Methods and Statistics

This is an introductory textbook on Quantitative Methods and Statistics, developed and used at Utrecht University (Linguistics) for the humanities. This book offers an overview of and introduction into the most important quantitative methods and statistical techniques used in the humanities. The book provides a solid methodological foundation for quantitative research, and it introduces the most commonly used statistical techniques to describe data and to test hypotheses. This will also enable the reader to critically evaluate such quantitative research. This textbook is being used as a basic textbook in introductory courses in quantitative methods and statistics at Utrecht University. The book is also highly suitable for self-study at a basic level, for everybody who wishes to learn more about quantitative methods and statistics. The main text has been kept free of mathematical derivations and formulas. The explanations are rather conceptual, and rich in examples. Where necessary derivations and formulas are presented in separate sections. This book also contains instructions on how to “do” the statistical analyses and visualisations, using the three statistical packages SPSS, JASP, and R. These instructions too are in separate sections.

The use of data to understand phenomena and evaluate designs and interventions in different disciplines is increasingly evident. As a result, engineers and other applied scientists frequently find themselves needing to collaborate in multidisciplinary fields when carrying out research to remain innovative. This course will help you to become a successful multidisciplinary researcher in industry, non-profit, or academia, and be more efficient and successful as you will know where the pitfalls are! This course explains the fundamentals on how to plan and carry out state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative research in different phases of an innovation or research project. The course has been designed by a team of experienced, multidisciplinary researchers in education, engineering and research methodologies and will also feature experts in the field of research methodologies as guest lecturers. In the course you will be working towards creating a project plan for your research, giving you a head-start in your research project. The interuniversity, interdisciplinary Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center for Education and Learning is a leader in multidisciplinary technological research and innovation projects. Learning from leading experts in the field you will learn to apply the best practices in your own context.
