Pluvial floods in Rotterdam-2

Rotterdam, a city located at the delta region and only 35 km to the sea, suffers from increasingly frequent intensive rainfall due to the climate change. The pluvial flood it causes overwhelms the urban drainage system first and then damages the transport systems. Residential and industrial infrastructures in the city and local ecology will be influenced as well. Ethically, it causes anxiety and conflictions among citizens, even triggers people’s unsatisfaction and denouncement. Solutions provided here focus on urban drainage and discharge system, water retention facilities, infiltration zones/ green spaces, protection of vulnerable infrastructures and government regulations. This report consists of seven parts: introduction to pluvial flood, affected parts of urban networks, condition till 2050 under climate change, ethical consequences, solution strategies, ethical implications of solutions and effect monitor.

A Brief History of Window Glass

The video "A Brief History of Window Glass" presents an overview of production and use of glass in architecture from the 1st to the 19th century. The first attempts to shape glass window panels were recorded as early as the 1st century BC, wider application began in the first half of the 1st century, while the glass blowing techniques were more intensively practiced only from the 3rd-4th century. Each historical period has its own specifics in terms of production, and especially the way window glass is used in everyday life. The video was produced by the Open GLASSroom project, in collaboration with the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar, Croatia. It is based on the exhibition "A Brief History of Window Glass" curated by Vedrana Jović Gazić, and the exhibition catalogue published by the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar. The original language of the video is Croatian. To view it with English subtitles and/or transcript, please follow the provided youtube link. The bilingual Croatian-English exhibition catalogue, as well as timecoded subtitles and video transcript in English and Croatian can also be separately downloaded. Droughts in Rotterdam

With Climate Change, the frequency and intensity of droughts hitting the city of Rotterdam is increasing with time. 2019 was the third consecutive dry year in a row. With drought, comes a number of problems such as low water level in the Maas river which is the biggest source of drinking water for the city of Rotterdam (80%) and it effects the water quality, reduction in shipping capacity, weakening of dikes, salt intrusion, lowering of groundwater level which could lead to subsidence, etc. A concept map provided in the report highlights the STE (Social, Technological & Ecological) impacts of droughts on the city of Rotterdam. Possible solution practices include increasing the infiltration capacity of the city through blue-green networks, bioswales, vertical gardens, spraying water on dikes, building rainwater harvesting and storage infrastructure. Importance should also be given to the ethical implications of the solution strategies and also the usage of monitoring techniques to help mitigate any adverse effects of a potential disaster. The report also includes some links for further reading which covers a wide horizon of topics related to the effect and mitigation of droughts on the city of Rotterdam and the scope of public private responsibilities for climate change.

An analysis of the current developments and scenarios for the transition to a fossil-free energy society this century

This century, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides must be significantly reduced. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation that contributes to global warming, which can lead to irreversible negative consequences for humans and the environment. Greenhouse gases are caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and natural gas, but livestock farming and agriculture are also to blame. In addition, deforestation contributes to more greenhouse gases. Of the natural greenhouse gases, water vapor is the main cause of the greenhouse effect, accounting for 90%. The remaining 10% is caused from high to low by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. In addition, there are industrial greenhouse gases such as fluorinated hydrocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride that contribute to the greenhouse effect too. Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the welfare of humans and animals. In some regions, extreme weather events like rainfall are more common, while others are associated with more extreme heat waves and droughts. Sea level rise caused by melting ice and an increase in forest fires are undesirable effects of climate change. Countries in low-lying areas fear that sea level rise will force their populations to move to the higher-lying areas. Climate change is affecting the entire world. An estimated 30-40% o f the carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuels dissolves into the surface water, resulting in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions. This causes the seawater to become more acidic, resulting in a decreasing of carbonate ions. Carbonate ions are an important building block for forming and maintaining calcium carbonate structures of organisms such as oysters, mussels, sea urchins, shallow water corals, deep sea corals, and calcareous plankton.

Interactive session: Risk & Risk mitigation

Recognize, analyze and discuss the necessity and the role of security testing in AI. Employ documents, such as the AI Act, to classify use cases into risk categories. Discuss in-depth and with common European vocabulary on AI risk and how can AI be designed safely and benevolently, in ways that will not expose humans to unacceptable risks of harm, even when risky behaviour may advance a system goal. Classify the obligations of providers and users in relation to AI risk management. Discuss the requirements for high-risk AI systems as per the AI Act. Elaborate and recognize specific risks and risk taxonomies, relevant throughout the different stages of the AI lifecycle.

Systematic review as a research method

A systematic review is a research method used to answer a very specific research question. Scoping reviews ask broader questions such as “What is already known about certain practices/theories etc.?” In this workshop you will learn more about: • Different types of reviews • Phases and stages of a review • Tools for your review process. Who can attend? • (External) PhD candidates or researchers at the Nijmegen School of Management who are planning to conduct a literature review. How can you prepare for the workshop? • Search for systematic reviews on your own research topic. Select at least one systematic review and one other type of review. • Read the method section of the articles you have found. Use the PRISMA checklist to evaluate on the authors' method. What items of the method are according to PRISMA, and which items are you missing? You're also invited to take a look at the workshop "Efficient and complete literature searches for researchers" It'll give you a great foundation before moving on to the workshop about systematic review as a research method. NOTE This comprehensive workshop was given at the Radboud University, School of Management in October and November 2024. It is shared here as inspiration and guidance for PhD candidates who are struggling to set up a good systematic review in order to find relevant literature.

Organizing for Sustainability - A Guide to Developing New Business Models

This upper-level Open Access textbook aims to educate students and professionals on how to develop business models that have a positive impact on people, society, and the social and ecological environment. It explores a different view of how to organize value creation, from a focus on an almost exclusively monetary value creation to one that creates positive impact through multiple values. The book offers students and entrepreneurs a structured approach based through the Business Model Template (BMT). It consists of three stages and ten building blocks to facilitate the development of a business model. Users, be they students or practitioners, need to choose from one of the three offered business model archetypes, namely the platform, community, or circular business models. Each archetype offers a dedicated logic for vale creation. The book can be used to develop a business model from scratch (turning an idea into a working prototype) or to transform an existing business model into one of the three archetypes. Throughout the book extra sources, links to relevant online video clips, assignments and literature are offered to facilitate the development process. This book will be of interest to students studying the development of business models, sustainable management, innovation, and value creation. It will also be of interest executives, and professionals such as consultants or social entrepreneurs seeking further education. Is supported by a self-paced MOOC, also Open Access, holding seven chapters and over 50 teaching units ready to use: https://bit.ly/3oFZ3jj
